Favorite Indonesian Food - Padang
By Gerardo Maureira
Hi! I want to talk a little about Indonesian Food, since it'll be easy for me to comment dishes I tried when I traveled to Indonesia to marry the woman I love. We're in Chile now, but that's another story =) I must say that my absolute favorite Indonesian food is Padangnese; that is, from the province of Padang, in West Sumatra; while in Indonesia, I never actually went to Sumatra but Padangnese food is REALLY popular in all over the country; every city I went, like Bogor, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, there were restaurants that offered this Indonesian yummy stuff. First of all, the "format" of the Padang restaurant is rather different than that of any other restaurant. Instead of ordering from a menu or choosing from a salad bar, you just sit down at the table and the waiter will bring the whole menu to you! Takes quite an ability to bring 9 or 10 small plates only with one trip. Hats to them =) So there you have to choose, BUT choose wisely because once you just "try" one dish, you must pay for all of it. So it's a good idea to go there with someone experienced. Lucky me, my wife is Indonesian. My personal choices always were, besides the rice (on a side), the Fish Eggs in Gulai sauce (Gulai is a sauce made from coconut milk; delicious!), the Perkedel (deep-fried balls from mashed potato, veggies and meat), Ayam Goreng (fried chicken), and Telur Gulai (boiled duck eggs with coconut milk sauce). You'll also get free tea coming to your table, but really hot and no sugar. No, thanks. With 34ÂșC, I don't need hot tea. I'm already soaked in sweat! Plus the food is spicy enough to make you sweat even more. Damn, I love spicy. In conclusion, besides the "typical" Indo food, like the fried rice (nasi goreng), the bubur ayam (typical breakfast from boiled rice with fried chicken, soy peanuts, ciboulette), and the "es campur" (fruit cocktail), I'd choose Padang food everyday. Not very advisable to eat it everyday though, since it has way too much cholesterol (the coconut), and is really spicy. Well, that's it for now. I'll keep talking about other Indonesian culinary pleasures soon. Bye! =)
